Mold is a common issue in UAE homes due to our climate. High humidity, condensation from constant AC use, and occasional water leaks create ideal conditions for it to grow. It typically appears as fuzzy black, green, or white patches on walls, ceilings, or inside AC units.
Start by identifying and controlling the moisture source. This is the most critical step, as mold cannot grow without it. Check for leaking pipes, AC drain pan overflow, or condensation on cold walls and windows. Use a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid winter months, to keep indoor humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce condensation and that its filters are cleaned or replaced monthly. For small surface mold on non-porous materials, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach can be effective for cleaning. Always wear gloves and a mask during the process. However, scrubbing visible mold without addressing the underlying moisture problem will only provide a temporary solution. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), keeps returning despite your efforts, or if you or family members are experiencing persistent allergies or respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the specific mold species and the exact moisture intrusion point, which is often hidden within walls or AC ductwork. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it's properly contained and removed, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your home. |
