How to improve closet air circulation to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting a fuzzy black mold on our leather shoes and bags, especially after the humid weather last month. We keep the AC running but it seems like the cold air isn't reaching the back of the closet properly. I'm worried it's going to ruin more of our stuff and I want to stop it before it gets worse. What's the best way to improve air circulation in a built-in closet to prevent this mold from coming back?

The cold air from your AC isn't reaching that back wall, creating a pocket of stagnant, humid air where condensation forms—the perfect environment for mold. This is a common issue in Dubai's built-in closets, especially on exterior walls that heat up.

First, improve circulation immediately. Install a battery-operated or USB-powered mini fan inside the closet to keep air moving; this can significantly reduce moisture buildup. Keep the closet doors open for a few hours each day to allow your room's conditioned air to circulate inside. For a more permanent solution, consider having an HVAC technician install a small vent or grille in the closet door or on the interior wall to facilitate airflow from the main room.

Before doing this, the current mold must be properly addressed. Wipe down all surfaces with a diluted vinegar or soap solution, but be cautious as improper cleaning can spread spores. The mold on your leather items may not be fully salvageable and could require professional cleaning.

If the problem recurs after improving circulation, the issue may be more serious, such as a tiny leak in the wall or insufficient insulation. In many UAE villas, the temperature differential between a sun-baked external wall and a chilled interior causes significant condensation. A professional inspection can identify if there's hidden moisture within the wall cavity itself, which would require targeted remediation to solve permanently.
