How to inspect black mold in bedroom and AC risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's gotten worse since the recent humidity. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC vents?

That black patch behind clothes on an exterior wall is a classic sign of a condensation issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. The wall is likely colder than the room's dew point, causing moisture to condense and feed mold growth.

For a proper inspection, you need a professional who uses a combination of methods. A visual inspection identifies the source of moisture—often a small leak or thermal bridging in that wall. Moisture meters are used to measure the water content in the building materials behind the surface. Most importantly, air and surface sampling should be sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This identifies the species of mold and determines if it is one of the more concerning types commonly found in buildings here. The final report should clearly state the root cause, the species present, and the specific remediation steps required.

Regarding AC risk, it is possible but not automatic. Mold spores can become airborne during disturbance and enter the ventilation system. A thorough inspection should include taking an air sample from a supply vent to check the spore count, comparing it to an outdoor sample. This is the only way to verify if your AC is circulating spores.

Given its location on an exterior wall and recent growth, this is a case where a professional assessment is strongly recommended to prevent further spread and identify any hidden moisture problems.
