How to inspect black mold in bedroom closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What's the best way to get a proper mold inspection done here to see how bad it really is and if it's inside the walls?

Black mold on an exterior wall in a Dubai bedroom closet is a common issue, often driven by the high humidity and temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall. This can lead to condensation inside the wall cavity, which you cannot see.

For a proper inspection, a visual assessment alone is insufficient. A professional inspection should include three key components. First, a borescope inspection involves making a small, discreet hole to visually inspect inside the wall for mold growth and moisture. Second, a moisture meter is used on the wall surface to quantify the dampness level compared to a dry reference wall. Third, and most critically, air and surface sampling is conducted. Air sampling outside the closet and inside the room establishes a baseline, while a tape-lift sample of the visible mold is sent to a microbiology lab for genus/species identification. This determines if it's the common Cladosporium or the more concerning Stachybotrys (black mold), which dictates the remediation approach.

In the UAE, always verify that the inspection company is affiliated with a certified microbiology lab to process the samples. The final report should provide the lab results, an assessment of the moisture source, and a clear scope for remediation—not just a recommendation for their own services. This evidence-based approach is the standard for verifying the true extent of the problem.
