How to kill and prevent black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed several large patches of black mold on the back wall. I first spotted it about a week ago when I was putting away winter clothes, and the room has a persistent damp smell even though we run the AC constantly. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity is just getting trapped in there. What is the most effective way to kill the existing mold and what can I do to prevent it from coming back, like a dehumidifier or something specific for the closet?

Black mold in closets on interior walls is common in Dubai's climate, especially in older buildings. The problem is rarely just surface mold; it's usually a symptom of high humidity and condensation trapped within the wall cavity, often from a nearby AC duct leak or poor insulation.

For the existing mold, do not attempt to kill it with bleach or simple sprays. These solutions are mostly water and can actually feed the mold roots deep in the porous wall material, causing it to return worse. The most effective removal involves physically extracting the contaminated material. For drywall, this typically means cutting out and replacing the affected section after the moisture source is fixed. The area must be HEPA-vacuumed and wiped with an EPA-approved antimicrobial cleaner by a professional to properly address airborne spores.

Prevention is entirely about moisture control. A dehumidifier in the room can help, but it's treating the symptom, not the cause. The priority is identifying why humidity is concentrating there. This requires a professional inspection to check for three things: insufficient AC airflow into the closet, a leaking cold water pipe running inside the wall, or, most commonly, a poorly insulated AC supply duct in the void space causing significant condensation. Simply sealing the closet or using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs is a temporary measure.

Given the description of several large patches and a persistent damp smell, this indicates a significant moisture issue. A certified mold assessor can perform a moisture mapping survey to pinpoint the exact source within the wall. Without fixing that underlying problem, the mold will almost certainly return, regardless of how well you clean the surface.
