How to kill and prevent mold in Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get dark black spots on the back wall, and all my clothes smell damp no matter how many times I wash them. It seems to have gotten much worse since the humidity spiked last month. I’m worried it’s spreading but I can’t move everything out to clean it properly. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what can I do to stop it from coming back?

The black spots and damp smell are classic signs of a mold colony, and the recent humidity spike is almost certainly the cause. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside air.
For a closet, start by removing all contents. Wash or dry-clean all affected fabrics. To kill the mold on the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective for surface growth. Scrub thoroughly, but be aware this only addresses what you can see. The wall cavity behind may be affected if this is an exterior wall, which is a common issue here. Preventing its return requires controlling humidity. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, even when you're out. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar to allow air circulation. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier (like those available in hardware stores) placed inside can help absorb excess moisture. For serious, recurring growth that returns after cleaning, the root cause may be hidden. A professional inspection with moisture mapping can identify if there's a leak or condensation issue within the wall itself that needs to be addressed. |
