How to kill black mold in Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Arabian Ranches has been feeling really humid since the summer started, and I’ve just spotted a few small black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I’m paranoid it’s the beginning of black mold and I really want to stop it before it gets worse and ruins everything. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity and kill this mold for good in our climate?

That's a classic Dubai humidity problem, especially in closets on exterior walls. The black speckles are a clear sign of condensation due to high humidity, which mold spores then feed on. Your priority is to control the moisture, not just clean the visible growth.

Start by addressing the humidity source. Ensure your AC is running consistently and set to a sufficiently low temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to effectively remove moisture from the air. Check that the closet isn't blocked or crammed full; air needs to circulate. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. For the existing mold, wear a mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth dampened with white vinegar or a diluted detergent solution. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't address the root moisture problem.

If the speckles return quickly, cover a larger area, or you detect a musty odour, the issue may be more extensive within the wall. In Dubai's climate, this is common. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify hidden condensation points or leaks. They can then perform targeted remediation, which often involves removing affected porous materials like drywall or insulation and applying antimicrobial treatments. For verification, a lab test can confirm the mold type and ensure the remediation was successful. Stopping it now is the right move to protect your home and belongings.
