How to kill closet mold and prevent dampness permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and there's a really damp smell every time I open it. This seems to have gotten much worse since the humidity rose a couple of months ago. I'm worried it's going to ruin more of my stuff and spread. What's the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what can I do to stop the dampness from coming back in that specific spot?

First, remove all affected items from the closet immediately. Leather is organic and will continue to feed mold growth. For non-porous surfaces inside the closet, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used to wipe down and kill surface mold. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

The dampness is almost certainly due to condensation forming on the cold interior wall, which is a common issue in Dubai where exterior walls are heated by the sun while indoor AC cools them. This creates a perfect, hidden environment for mold. Killing the surface mold is a temporary fix unless you address this condensation point.

To prevent it from returning, you must improve air circulation and insulate the wall. Leave the closet doors open as much as possible and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. For a more permanent solution, a professional can assess if the wall requires insulation or a vapour barrier to break the thermal bridge causing the condensation. This is a known construction challenge in the region.

For a case with visible growth and a persistent damp smell, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out more serious hidden mold growth within the wall cavity. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation source and recommend a targeted remediation and prevention plan, which may include proper antimicrobial cleaning and environmental controls.
