How to kill mold in closet and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black spots on my leather bags and shoes, and it’s been getting worse since the weather turned more humid last month. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what can I do to keep the moisture out of that closet specifically?

That pattern of black spots on leather in a closet against an outside wall is a classic sign of condensation-related mold, very common in older Bur Dubai buildings during humid months. The wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for mold.

First, address the active growth. For a surface issue on non-porous items, a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated mold remover can be effective; test on a small, hidden area of the leather first. Never mix cleaning products. However, if the mold has penetrated the leather or the drywall behind, cleaning the surface won't be a permanent solution. The root cause is the moisture.

To prevent moisture, you need to manage the temperature differential and humidity. Increase air circulation inside the closet. Leave the door ajar and consider a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a closet dehumidifier unit like those filled with moisture-absorbing crystals. Ensure your AC is running consistently, as this is your primary dehumidifier. Check that the room's AC vent isn't blocked and is directing air towards the closet area. For a more permanent solution, insulating the exterior wall from inside the closet can prevent the cold surface that causes condensation, though this requires a contractor.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you see extensive growth, a professional inspection is recommended to assess if there's a hidden leak or significant penetration into the wall. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness.
