How to kill mold in shower grout permanently?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles growing along the grout in the shower. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan on. What’s the most effective way to kill this mold for good without having to re-grout the entire shower?

Black speckles in shower grout are almost certainly mold, thriving on the soap scum and moisture in Dubai's high humidity. The key to permanent removal isn't just killing what's visible; it's controlling the environment that allows it to grow.

Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a dedicated grout brush and a paste of baking soda and water or a diluted vinegar solution. For more stubborn growth, a commercial mold remover containing hydrogen peroxide can be effective. Always test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't discour the grout. After treatment, the area must be completely dry to prevent immediate regrowth.

Permanence depends entirely on moisture control. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and the shower floor with a squeegee. In many Dubai apartments, the built-in exhaust fans are underpowered; if your bathroom never fully dries, upgrading to a higher-capacity fan is a worthwhile investment.

If the mold has penetrated deep into the grout or reappears quickly despite thorough cleaning and moisture control, the issue may be more serious. Hidden moisture behind the tiles can feed extensive growth. In such cases, a professional inspection using moisture meters and borescopes can identify the source. For severe, recurring problems, the only permanent solution may be to remove the compromised grout, treat the substrate, and re-grout with a high-quality, mold-inhibitive product.
