How to permanently eliminate damp smell in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get a really strong damp smell every time we open it. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for a few years, but this only started a couple of months ago. I’m worried it’s mold, especially with the high humidity lately. What’s the most effective way to eliminate the moisture in there for good, beyond just using a dehumidifier bag?

A persistent damp smell in an interior closet is a classic indicator of a hidden moisture source, likely mold growth behind the wall or under the flooring. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer nights, causes condensation to form on cold surfaces like concrete walls, creating the perfect environment for mold.

First, identify the moisture source. Check for a leaking pipe in the adjacent wall or bathroom. Inspect the exterior wall of your villa for cracks in the rendering that could be letting in dampness from recent rains. The most common cause, however, is condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the non-insulated closet wall.

For a permanent solution, you must address the condensation point. Insulating the interior wall of the closet is the most effective long-term fix. This creates a thermal break, preventing the cold wall from contacting the warm, humid air. Ensure the closet door is left ajar periodically to allow air circulation from the room's AC, which acts as a dehumidifier.

Using a moisture absorber is a temporary measure. For a confirmed issue of this nature, a professional inspection is recommended to locate the exact extent of the mold growth with a borescope and moisture meter, as it is often concealed. Remediation would involve removing affected materials, treating the area, and then implementing the insulation solution to prevent recurrence.
