How to permanently fix AC leak mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’m seeing these small black speckles on the back wall and on some of my shoes. It’s been humid the last few weeks and the smell is getting really musty every time I open the closet door. I’ve wiped it down with vinegar, but I’m worried it’s just going to come back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this stuff and prevent it from returning in this specific AC leak situation?

The leak must be fixed first. Until the moisture source is addressed, any cleaning is temporary. In Dubai's high humidity, mould will return within days. An HVAC technician needs to identify the leak's cause—often a clogged drain pan or cracked condensate pipe—and repair it. This is the only permanent solution to stop the water.
Vinegar only removes surface mould you can see; it doesn't address the spores or the moisture feeding it inside the wall or AC unit. For a recurring problem from a leak, professional remediation is needed. They will contain the area, use HEPA vacuums to remove spores, and apply EPA-approved antimicrobials to the affected building materials. To prevent its return after the leak is fixed, control the humidity. Run a small dehumidifier or a continuously vented exhaust fan in the closet. Ensure the AC unit is serviced annually, including cleaning the drain pan and condensate line to prevent future blockages. For confirmed black mould, a lab test can identify the species and the appropriate remediation protocol, as some types require specific handling. |
