How to permanently fix and prevent bedroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah Park has a persistent damp smell, especially in the corner behind the wardrobe. I pulled the furniture out last week and found a few small black spots on the wall. We run the AC constantly, but with the recent humidity, I'm terrified it's going to come back and spread. What's the most effective long-term solution to treat this and prevent it from happening again in our Dubai climate?

Permanent mold prevention in Dubai's climate requires addressing both the moisture source and the visible growth. The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely due to a thermal bridge—that corner is cooler than the surrounding wall, causing condensation when humid air meets the cold surface, especially with constant AC use. Simply wiping it away will not stop it from returning.

Start by having a professional assess the wall for the exact moisture source. In many Dubai villas, this can be minor seepage from a balcony above or inadequate external waterproofing. The wall must be completely dried using industrial dehumidifiers before any treatment; applying antimicrobial solutions to a damp wall is ineffective.

For long-term prevention, the thermal bridge must be insulated. A specialist can inject insulation into the cavity wall or apply an insulating plasterboard to that specific area to prevent condensation from forming. Improving air circulation behind the wardrobe is also critical; even a small gap of a few inches between the furniture and the wall can make a significant difference.

Maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% year-round. Your AC helps, but during the peak humid summer months, supplementing with a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can provide the extra moisture control needed. For proper identification and to rule out less common species, a lab test of a swab sample is a definitive step. The remediation approach should be based on those results to ensure the correct antimicrobial is used.
