How to permanently fix and prevent closet mold growth?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has been smelling damp for the past couple of months. I finally cleared it out and found a patch of black mold in the corner, hidden behind some shoes. We keep the AC running most of the time, but the humidity still seems to get in there. What's the most effective way to permanently fix this and stop the mold from growing back in that spot?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to condensation forming on the cold exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai where high outdoor humidity meets chilled interior surfaces. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source.

For the existing patch, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can clean small areas (under 1 square meter). Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. However, scrubbing visible mold doesn't remove spores embedded in porous materials like drywall or the root system (mycelium). If the wall feels damp or the drywall is soft, the material is compromised and likely needs cutting out and replacing.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity and temperature differential. Increase air circulation inside the closet by leaving the door ajar or installing a small battery-operated vent fan. Ensure your AC unit is properly sized and maintained, as an overworked system won't dehumidify effectively. For that specific cold wall, consider adding a moisture barrier, like a foil-backed insulation board, behind the shelving to prevent condensation from forming.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor throughout the room, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint hidden dampness and can perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. Permanent fixes often require structural solutions to manage the unique condensation challenges of UAE construction.
