How to permanently fix and prevent closet mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get a bunch of black speckles on the back panel and my clothes smell a bit damp, especially after the recent humidity. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and this just started. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to be enough. What’s the best way to get rid of this for good and prevent it from coming back next winter?

This is a classic Dubai problem caused by high ambient humidity and cold surfaces from constant AC use. The back panel of your closet is likely an exterior wall, making it a cold spot where moisture from the air condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.

To fix it, first address the active growth. Wearing a mask and gloves, clean the affected area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Discard any heavily contaminated, unsalvageable items. This is a surface-level fix; the spores are likely deeper within the porous materials.

Permanent prevention requires controlling the humidity and temperature differential. Increase air circulation inside the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar periodically. For a Jumeirah villa, the most effective solution is often installing a small, dedicated dehumidifier in the room or having an HVAC specialist assess if your AC's dehumidification function is operating correctly for the space's size.

The root cause could be inadequate insulation in that exterior wall, a common issue that allows the internal surface to become much colder than the room's air. A professional inspection can identify this and other hidden sources of moisture. For a confirmed, recurring problem like this, remediation followed by preventative measures like improving airflow or applying anti-microbial coatings is the standard for a long-term solution.
