How to permanently fix black grout in shower?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's grout in the shower has been turning black for the last couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach spray, it just comes back within a week. I live in an older building in Bur Dubai where the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can fix permanently myself with a specific product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Black grout in Dubai showers is almost always mold, thriving on the humidity and condensation from our climate. Bleach only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a permanent fix, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door open to improve air circulation. In an older Bur Dubai building with poor ventilation, a small dehumidifier can make a significant difference.

For the grout itself, stop using bleach. Instead, use a dedicated mold-killing product containing concrobium or a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner; these are more effective at penetrating and killing the mold at its root. After a deep clean, sealing the grout with a high-quality penetrating sealer is critical to prevent moisture from being absorbed. Reapply this sealer every one to two years.

If the mold returns persistently despite these efforts, it indicates a deeper issue, potentially behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the extent. They can perform moisture readings and, if necessary, take samples for lab analysis to identify the specific mold type and recommend a targeted remediation protocol, which may involve regrouting or tile replacement to fully resolve it.
