How to permanently fix damp closet and mold on leather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment is constantly damp, and I’ve just found black spots on a few of my leather bags and shoes. It’s worse on the wall that faces the outside, especially since the weather got more humid. What’s the best way to treat this and stop it from coming back for good?

That damp closet and mold on leather is a classic Dubai issue, especially in older Jumeirah buildings. The outside wall is likely cooler than your air-conditioned room, causing condensation in the hidden space behind your belongings. This constant moisture allows mold to thrive.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all items from the closet. For the leather goods, gently wipe the mold off with a soft, dry cloth. Follow with a damp cloth dipped in a solution of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), then wipe with a dry cloth. Allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight. For the wall itself, a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) can be used to wipe down the surfaces and kill surface mold.

The permanent fix requires stopping the moisture source. You need to increase air circulation behind that wall. This often means cutting a ventilation grille into the closet door or the interior wall to allow your room's cooled, dehumidified air to flow into the space. Ensure items are stored with space around them, never pushed tightly against the exterior wall.

For a lasting solution, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to confirm the condensation theory and identify any potential hidden leaks within the wall cavity. In many cases, properly insulating that cold exterior wall from the inside is the only way to permanently prevent the temperature differential that causes the condensation. Given the value of your belongings and the potential for hidden mold growth inside the wall, a diagnostic assessment can pinpoint the exact cause and the most effective remediation method.
