How to permanently fix mold behind wardrobe in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our master bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa has these black speckles, and the clothes inside have a damp, stale smell. It’s been like this since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, and even though we run the AC, it hasn't cleared up. What’s the best way to treat this properly so it doesn't just come back next season?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth due to condensation and high ambient humidity, a very common issue in Dubai villas, particularly in areas with restricted airflow like behind wardrobes. The wall behind the furniture is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the warm external wall causes moisture to condense, creating the perfect environment for mold.

A permanent fix requires a systematic approach, not just surface cleaning. First, the affected area must be professionally inspected to determine the extent of the growth behind the wall and to identify the specific mold type. This dictates the remediation protocol. The process involves isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA filtration units to capture airborne spores, and then carefully removing the contaminated materials. All surfaces are then treated with EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to kill residual mold at the root.

Crucially, the source of the moisture must be addressed. This involves improving ventilation behind the wardrobe, potentially by installing a ventilation grill on the wardrobe back panel, and ensuring your AC system is correctly sized and maintained to effectively manage the indoor humidity levels year-round, which is critical in our climate. Simply wiping the visible mold away with bleach is ineffective and can exacerbate the problem by releasing more spores.

For a proper and permanent solution that complies with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive inspection, provide a detailed remediation plan, and implement the necessary corrective measures to ensure the mold does not return next season.
