How to permanently fix mold on wardrobe exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots appearing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the sea in Marina. It's definitely worse since the humidity spiked last month. We run the AC constantly but I'm worried the moisture is getting trapped behind there. What's the best way to permanently fix this and stop it from coming back?

This is a classic Dubai issue, especially in sea-facing Marina properties where salt and high humidity combine. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a "cold bridge," where the exterior temperature difference causes condensation inside, trapping moisture against the wall and fostering mould growth. Running the AC constantly lowers the air temperature but doesn't address this trapped, stagnant humidity.
For a permanent fix, the wardrobe must be emptied and pulled away from the wall to assess the full extent. The mould on the surface needs to be professionally remediated with appropriate antimicrobial agents, not just wiped with bleach, which often drives it deeper. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. The wall itself likely requires treatment—this could involve cleaning, applying a mould-resistant primer, and potentially adding a vapour barrier or insulation to prevent the condensation from recurring. Finally, improve air circulation behind the unit. Even a small gap of a few inches between the wardrobe and the wall can make a significant difference. Using a portable dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid nights, can also help maintain a drier environment that prevents regrowth. For a case like this, a professional inspection is advised to diagnose any potential hidden issues within the wall cavity and ensure the remediation protocol meets Dubai Municipality standards. |
