How to permanently fix nad prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed a patch of black mold. I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, and it’s slowly getting bigger despite me wiping it down. The room always feels a bit damp, and I’m worried the problem is behind the drywall, especially after the recent humidity. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back?

The black mold in your closet is a symptom of excess moisture, likely from a hidden source like a small leak in the wall or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation from the temperature differential between your cold AC and the humid air. Wiping it is ineffective because you're only removing the visible surface growth, not the root structure penetrating porous materials like drywall.

For a permanent fix, you must first find and stop the moisture source. Given the location on an inside wall and the persistent damp feeling, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter is the most effective first step. This non-invasive method can pinpoint condensation points or hidden leaks behind the wall without unnecessary demolition.

Once the source is addressed, remediation involves removing and replacing the affected drywall and insulation, as the mold will have penetrated deeply. Simply spraying a biocide will not remove it. The area must be properly contained during work to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home.

To prevent recurrence, control the indoor humidity. Ensure your AC is correctly sized and functioning to remove ambient moisture; units that are too large short-cycle and do not run long enough to dehumidify properly. For enclosed spaces like closets, leave some air gap between the wall and your belongings, and consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier. Maintaining consistent temperature and using exhaust fans throughout the villa are key in our climate.
