How to permanently fix wardrobe mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit and now I’ve found black fuzzy patches on the back of the wardrobe in the bedroom. It’s been crazy humid the last few weeks and the room just never feels completely dry. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

The AC leak is creating a persistent moisture source, which, combined with Dubai's high humidity, is the perfect environment for mold. To permanently fix this, you must address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture problem.

Start by having an HVAC technician repair the AC leak. This is the non-negotiable first step; without it, the mold will return. For the wardrobe itself, the cleaning method depends on the material. For solid, non-porous surfaces, a solution of detergent and water can scrub it away. For porous materials like wood or drywall, the mold often penetrates deeper than visible. Scrubbing can disturb spores but may not remove the root structure.

Given the fuzzy patches, the mold is established. The most effective approach is to have a professional assess the extent. They can determine if the wall cavity behind the wardrobe is affected, which is common in these scenarios. Remediation often involves controlled removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.

To stop it from coming back, ensure the room's humidity is controlled. Run your AC consistently, even when the villa is unoccupied, to manage moisture levels. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in that room, especially during the more humid winter months. Improve air circulation by not pushing furniture completely against walls and periodically airing out the room when the outdoor humidity is lower. For a verifiable, permanent solution, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the full scope and provide a remediation plan with post-clearance testing.
