How to permanently kill and prevent black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold growing in the corner of my bedroom. I wiped it away with vinegar, but it came back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective way to kill it for good and prevent it from returning in this humid climate?

The recurring mold indicates an active moisture source, which your AC leak is providing. In Dubai's high humidity, simply wiping the surface mold is a temporary fix; the spores and moisture within the materials remain.
First, stop the leak. This is the critical step. Have an HVAC technician inspect and repair the AC unit's drain line or condensation pan. Until it's fixed, the mold will keep returning. For the affected carpet and underlying padding, surface cleaning is insufficient. The mold has likely penetrated deep into the fibers and backing. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to cut out and properly dispose of the contaminated section of carpet and padding. After removal and repair, address the area. Scrub the now-exposed concrete floor with a detergent solution, then a disinfectant like diluted bleach (ensure good ventilation). Allow it to dry completely—a fan can help—before installing new materials. To prevent its return, manage indoor humidity. Run your AC consistently, as it dehumidifies the air. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens. For persistent humidity issues, especially during the more humid summer months, a dedicated dehumidifier can be very effective. Given that the mold has already returned once, a professional inspection is wise to confirm the full extent of the growth, particularly if it might have spread into wall cavities. A company with microbiological lab testing can identify the mold type and verify the remediation was successful through post-cleanup testing. |
