How to permanently kill and prevent black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing along the bottom of the bedroom wall behind the dresser. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because this room gets less sun and we keep the AC running constantly. What is the most effective way to kill this mold for good and prevent it from coming back, especially in such a humid climate?

Black mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation, including coughing, especially in children. The constant AC use and lack of sun create a perfect environment for it behind furniture.

For a small area, scrub the visible growth with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning. However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the underlying cause isn't addressed, it will return.

Permanent removal requires fixing the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from AC units or a small, unseen water leak. Check for clogged AC drain lines and ensure the unit is properly insulated. Improving air circulation by moving furniture away from walls and occasionally opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower can drastically reduce dampness.

For a recurring problem or if the area is larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture pathway. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden issues. In many cases, the wall cavity may need to be opened to dry it out completely and treat the structure, which is the only way to prevent it from coming back in this climate.
