How to permanently kill and prevent mold behind damp wall?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but the wall feels damp to the touch. I’m worried it’s spreading because the AC unit is right on the other side of that wall. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and prevent it from coming back, especially in this humidity?

Visible black spots with a damp wall and a nearby AC unit indicate a moisture issue that needs immediate attention. Simply wiping it won't solve the underlying problem.

The dampness is likely from condensation due to the temperature differential between the cold AC ducting in the wall and Dubai's humid air. This creates a perpetual moisture source for mold growth. The first step is to identify and stop the water intrusion. For an AC-related leak, a qualified HVAC technician should inspect the unit and insulation for condensation control.

To treat the existing mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean non-porous surfaces with a detergent solution. For porous materials like drywall that are damp and stained, removal and replacement is often the only permanent solution, as mold roots (hyphae) penetrate deeply and cannot be reliably cleaned.

Preventing recurrence is critical. After fixing the leak, ensure the area is completely dry using dehumidifiers and increased ventilation. Improve air circulation behind the wardrobe. Consider applying an EPA-approved antimicrobial coating to the new wall surface. In Dubai's climate, maintaining indoor humidity below 60% using dehumidifiers or your AC's dry mode is essential to prevent mold from returning elsewhere.

Given the health symptoms and scale, a professional inspection is advised to assess the wall cavity and AC unit for hidden growth. A company with microbial testing can identify the mold type and provide a protocol for safe, permanent removal.
