How to permanently kill and prevent mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Park villa has been a nightmare since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I pulled out my winter jackets yesterday and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We run the AC constantly, but it feels damp in there. What is the most effective way to kill this mold for good and what can I do to stop it from coming back every season?

The most effective way to handle this is a two-step process: first address the active growth, then correct the environmental conditions that caused it. For the jackets, dry cleaning is the most reliable method to kill mold on fabrics without damaging them. For the closet itself, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can scrub away surface mold on non-porous surfaces. However, this only addresses the visible problem.

The damp feeling and recurrent mold in a Jumeirah Park villa, despite AC use, points to a high humidity source. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to a compromised AC system not properly dehumidifying the air, a small water leak from an adjacent pipe, or condensation forming on cold walls—a common issue when AC ducts run through closets. The mold will return unless the moisture source is identified and controlled.

For a persistent closet issue, a professional inspection is advised to pinpoint the exact cause. They can perform a moisture survey to find hidden leaks and assess if your AC's dehumidification function is operating correctly. To prevent recurrence, ensure the closet is not overpacked to allow air circulation. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside can help, but fixing the underlying moisture issue is permanent. If the mold covers a large area (typically over 10 square feet) or has a strong, musty odor, remediation by a certified company is recommended to ensure it is handled safely and thoroughly.
