How to permanently kill and prevent mold in Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get black speckles on the back wall, and our clothes have a damp feeling to them. It's been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of months ago, even though we run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves to kill the mold for good, and what can we do to stop it from coming back every summer?

The black speckles and damp feeling point to a classic Dubai humidity problem, likely made worse by the AC's cold air hitting the warmer wall surface inside the closet, creating condensation. This trapped moisture is what the mold is feeding on.
For immediate treatment, first identify the material. On non-porous surfaces like painted drywall, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective; scrub the area thoroughly. For porous materials like unfinished wood or the back of the wardrobe, the mold may have penetrated deeply, making complete removal by yourself difficult. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Killing the visible growth is only half the solution. To prevent its permanent return, you must address the humidity source. Ensure the closet is not overstuffed, as this restricts air circulation. Leave a small gap between the back wall and your clothes. Keep the closet doors slightly ajar to allow conditioned air to flow through. Check that the room's AC vent is not blocked and is properly cooling the entire space, including the closet area. A standalone dehumidifier placed in the bedroom during the most humid months can make a significant difference. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the mold type, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation protocol is correct for the species present. In villas, this often traces back to external wall leaks or internal condensation issues that require more targeted solutions. |
