How to permanently kill bathroom black mold in UAE humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s suddenly appeared in the corners of our master bathroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What’s the most effective way to kill this stuff for good in our UAE climate?

Black mold in bathrooms here is almost always due to persistent moisture, not just surface dirt. Our high humidity means walls may never fully dry, especially in enclosed showers. The most effective permanent solution requires addressing the moisture source first.

Start by verifying your exhaust fan is actually moving enough air. Hold a single square of toilet paper to the vent grill while it's on; if it doesn't hold firmly, the fan is underpowered or the duct is blocked. After showers, run the fan for at least 30 minutes. Wipe down wet walls and glass with a squeegee to remove standing water—this is the single most effective habit to reduce mold growth.

For cleaning, avoid bleach as it only lightens the color and doesn't kill the roots. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse and dry completely.

If the mold is in silicone sealant or porous grout, surface cleaning is temporary. The material itself is likely compromised and holding moisture. Permanent removal requires cutting out the old sealant, ensuring the substrate beneath is bone dry, and applying new high-quality mold-resistant silicone.

For recurring or widespread black mold, especially with health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify hidden moisture in walls or assess if your AC system is contributing to the high humidity. In many cases, a dehumidifier or positive ventilation system is needed to achieve a permanent solution in our climate.
