How to permanently kill mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. We keep the AC on most of the time but the room still feels damp, especially after I shower. What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, extremely common in Dubai bedrooms where exterior walls meet cold air from AC units. The damp feeling confirms high humidity is the root cause.

For the existing mold, do not simply spray bleach. This can worsen the problem by adding moisture and only bleaches the surface, leaving the root structure intact. For a small area (under one square meter), wearing an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the wall with a mixture of detergent and water. Dry it completely immediately after. However, if the mold is widespread, has a musty odor, or is on drywall, the wall material itself may be compromised and require professional removal to prevent spores from spreading through your home.

Permanently stopping it requires fixing the humidity. A dehumidifier is essential. For a standard bedroom in Silicon Oasis, a unit with a capacity of 10-12 litres per day is typically sufficient. Look for one with a built-in hygrometer and an auto-shutoff function to maintain humidity between 45-55%, the range where mold cannot grow.

The most critical step is to address the condensation source. Your AC is likely set very cold, creating an extreme temperature differential with the humid outdoor air. This causes water to condense on cooler surfaces like that exterior wall. Increase your AC temperature slightly (24-25°C is often comfortable) and ensure it is set to "dry" or "low fan" mode to remove more moisture from the air. Run exhaust fans in the bathroom for at least 30 minutes after showering.

For health symptoms like persistent coughing, a professional inspection and air quality test is strongly recommended to identify the specific mold species and its concentration, as this dictates the appropriate remediation protocol.
