How to permanently kill mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. The most effective permanent removal starts with identifying the moisture source—often it's condensation from an exterior wall cooled by AC. Simply killing the mold with a biocide like diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold remover is insufficient if the moisture remains; it will return.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe, scrub the area with a mold-killing solution, and let it dry completely. However, if the mold covers a larger area or is inside the wall, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent cross-contamination and ensure it's truly gone. They use containment barriers and industrial air scrubbers. To prevent recurrence, a dehumidifier is crucial. In Dubai's climate, a compressor-based dehumidifier rated for at least 20-30 liters per day is effective for a standard bedroom. Maintain indoor humidity levels between 45-55%. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly and that its condensate drain line is not clogged, as this contributes significantly to indoor moisture. Improving air circulation behind large furniture by leaving a small gap from the wall can also help. For health concerns, especially with children, a professional indoor air quality assessment can identify the mold species and spore levels. |
