How to permanently kill mold in a Dubai shower?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our shower area. It's in the master bathroom of our villa in Jumeirah, which doesn't have a window. The smell is really musty, especially after my husband takes a hot shower.
What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good in our humid Dubai climate, and should I call a professional cleaning company or is a DIY solution enough?

The high humidity and lack of ventilation in many Dubai bathrooms create a perfect environment for mold. To kill it effectively, you must address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture.
Start with a DIY approach using a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it generously on the affected grout and let it sit for at least an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water can be used for additional abrasive power. Never mix vinegar with bleach. After cleaning, it is critical to reduce humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and leave the bathroom door open to allow air circulation. A squeegee used on the walls and floor immediately after showering removes the standing water mold needs to grow. If the mold returns quickly after thorough cleaning, or if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the tile backing, the problem is likely deeper than surface level. In such cases, and especially for families with allergies or asthma, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent. They can perform swab tests to identify the species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and for ensuring the correct remediation method is used. For a persistent issue in a windowless villa bathroom, a professional assessment can determine if improvements to mechanical ventilation are needed to provide a permanent solution. |
