How to permanently prevent bathroom mold in Dubai apartments?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally found black mold spots growing along the bottom of the wall where it meets the tiled floor. We run the exhaust fan during showers, but the humidity just doesn't seem to go away, especially after my long morning showers. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this from coming back, maybe a specific type of paint or a dehumidifier I can get here?

The most effective long-term solution combines moisture control, surface treatment, and ventilation improvement, crucial for Dubai's high humidity. Start by addressing the current growth: the mold along the wall-floor joint suggests moisture is wicking up from the grout or a hidden leak. A professional inspection can identify if the issue is surface condensation or something more serious, like a plumbing leak behind the wall.

For immediate treatment, clean the visible mold with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, which doesn't prevent regrowth. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during cleaning. For long-term prevention, a dehumidifier is highly effective, especially for bathrooms with poor external ventilation. Run it for 30-60 minutes after your shower. Also, check that your exhaust fan is actually moving sufficient air; many older apartment units are underpowered.

Regarding paint, use a high-quality anti-mold paint or primer designed for wet areas. Look for products labelled "mould-resistant" or "kitchen & bathroom" paint. These contain biocides that inhibit growth. Before repainting, the wall must be completely dry and any existing mold must be eradicated, or it will grow through the new paint.

Ultimately, the goal is to reduce the ambient humidity that allows mold to thrive. This means running the exhaust fan longer (aim for at least 20-30 minutes post-shower), using a dehumidifier, and wiping down wet surfaces. If the musty smell persists after a thorough clean, the mold may be behind the tiles or under the sealant, which requires professional assessment and remediation to solve permanently.
