How to permanently prevent black mold on windows?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from black mold I just found along the edges of the window in their bedroom. We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and this is the first time I've seen it, probably because of all the recent humidity. I’ve wiped it away with bleach, but how can I stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold on windows in Dubai is almost always a condensation issue, not a leak. The recent high humidity causes water to condense on the cooler glass and frame, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow. Wiping with bleach only removes the visible surface stain; the microscopic roots remain inside the porous material.
To prevent it permanently, you must control the humidity and eliminate the condensation. First, ensure your AC is running efficiently and set to a consistent, cool temperature that keeps indoor humidity below 60%. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms religiously. For a more targeted solution, a small desiccant dehumidifier in that bedroom overnight can make a significant difference by pulling moisture directly from the air. Improving air circulation is also critical. Avoid pushing furniture directly against external walls and keep curtains open during the day to allow air to move across the window surface. For a more permanent fix, consider applying a anti-condensation window film to the glass, which helps insulate the pane and raises its surface temperature. If the mold returns quickly after these measures, the issue may be more systemic. A professional inspection can identify hidden moisture within the wall or confirm the AC system itself is not contributing to the problem by measuring the exact humidity levels at the source. In many villas, the underlying cause is a combination of high ambient humidity and insufficient thermal insulation in the walls around the windows. |
