How to permanently prevent closet moisture in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and the whole area smells damp. This is the second time it's happened since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, even though I run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to keep the moisture out of my closets for good?

Closet moisture in Dubai is primarily caused by condensation from the high humidity interacting with cooler surfaces, like your exterior walls. Running the AC constantly lowers the air temperature but doesn't always address the high humidity level itself, especially in enclosed spaces like closets where airflow is restricted.

Start by improving air circulation. Leave closet doors slightly ajar and ensure vents in the room are not blocked by furniture. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber box (like those with silica gel) placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. For leather goods, this is critical to prevent permanent damage.

The recurring issue suggests a persistent moisture source. Inspect the closet's exterior wall for any hidden leaks from AC drain lines or minor seepage, which is common after building settlement. Ensure the room's AC unit is functioning correctly; a faulty unit may cool without effectively removing humidity. The Dubai climate demands AC systems that are specifically maintained for dehumidification.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is often necessary. They can identify if the problem is due to insufficient insulation in the exterior wall (a common issue where cold interior meets hot exterior, creating condensation) or if your AC system requires servicing to optimize its moisture removal capabilities. In many cases, addressing the wall's thermal bridging and ensuring the AC is dehumidifying properly resolves the issue for good.
