How to permanently prevent mold in Dubai bedrooms?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found along the baseboards in their bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's behind their heavy dresser so it might have been there a while. I'm worried about their health and want to stop it from coming back after I clean it. What's the most effective long-term solution to prevent mold growth in a bedroom here in Dubai?

Black mold behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai bedrooms, primarily due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the moisture source and improving air circulation.

First, move all furniture at least 10-15 cm away from the walls. This allows air to circulate behind them, preventing the cold wall surfaces from creating a damp, stagnant environment where mold thrives. Wipe down any condensation that forms on AC vents or cold walls daily.

For the existing mold, cleaning the visible growth with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution is a start, but it only addresses the surface. The mold's root system can penetrate porous materials like drywall. For health concerns, especially with children coughing, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify the species. Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend certified remediation for areas larger than 10 square feet due to potential health risks and cross-contamination.

The permanent fix is controlling humidity. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized for the room and set to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 45-55%. Servicing your AC regularly is critical, as a clogged drain line or dirty filter can contribute significantly to indoor moisture. Consider using a dedicated dehumidifier in the bedroom if humidity levels remain high.

Finally, after remediation, repaint the affected areas with a mold-inhibiting primer before applying your top coat to provide a long-term barrier against regrowth.
