How to permanently remove AC-caused black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be constantly leaking, and now I’ve found black mold spots on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. I’ve wiped it off twice, but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold for good and stop the AC from causing this, especially with our humidity?

The recurring mold indicates a persistent moisture source, which in Dubai is almost always AC-related. Simply wiping visible mold is ineffective because the spores are airborne and the moisture problem remains unresolved.
First, address the AC leak. This is the root cause. In JVC's high humidity, condensation drain lines can clog with algae and dust, causing water to back up and leak. A qualified AC technician needs to inspect the unit, clear the drain line, ensure the drain pan is properly sloped, and check the insulation on the cold refrigerant lines. Until this leak is fixed, any mold removal will be temporary. For the mold itself, since it's recurring, a professional assessment is recommended to determine the extent, especially within the wall cavity. For a small area, you can clean it with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mold remover. However, killing the mold is only half the solution; you must then remove the spores and moisture. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried. A dehumidifier in the room can help significantly with this step in our climate. Crucially, porous materials like drywall or insulation that have been saturated often need to be cut out and replaced, as mold roots deeply into them. Painting over it with mold-inhibiting paint is only a final step after the moisture source is eliminated and the area is completely dry and clean. For a permanent solution, the protocol is: fix the AC leak, remove and properly dispose of contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuum and clean the area, then ensure it is completely dry before restoring. Given the humidity and the fact it's returned twice, engaging a company with the equipment for proper containment, drying, and verification (like post-remediation testing) is often necessary to ensure it's truly resolved. |
