How to permanently remove adn prevent mold in humid Dubai villa??« Back to Previous Page

My villa in Jumeirah 3 has been constantly humid, and now I’ve found black spots growing behind the wardrobe in my master bedroom. It's been like this since the weather started getting hotter and we've had the AC running non-stop. I’m worried about it spreading and causing health issues. What’s the most effective way to not only clean this existing mold but also to prevent it from coming back in our Dubai humidity, especially with the AC creating condensation?

The most effective approach combines addressing the visible growth and correcting the moisture source, which is critical in Dubai's climate.

For the black spots behind your wardrobe, start by wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, not bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper. Discard any porous materials like damaged drywall or cardboard that are contaminated. This is a temporary fix if the underlying humidity issue isn't resolved.

Permanent prevention requires controlling indoor humidity, which is often exacerbated by AC systems running constantly. Your AC is likely creating the cold surfaces where condensation forms, feeding the mold. First, ensure your AC unit is correctly sized for the space and that its drain lines are clear and not clogged, which is a common cause of excess moisture. Set the thermostat to a consistent, reasonable temperature (around 22-24°C) to avoid extreme temperature differentials that cause condensation. Use a dehumidifier in persistently damp rooms like bedrooms, aiming to keep relative humidity below 60%.

Improve air circulation behind large furniture; move the wardrobe a few inches from the wall. For villas, inspect the building envelope for leaks, especially during winter rains, and ensure bathroom exhaust fans are venting properly.

For a case like yours with recurring humidity, a professional inspection is advised to identify hidden condensation points and assess the AC system's role. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment and, if necessary, take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This science-driven diagnosis is the only way to create a targeted, permanent remediation and prevention plan.
