How to permanently remove and prevent closet mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started to get black spots on the back wall and our clothes smell damp. We noticed it a couple of weeks after that period of heavy dew in the mornings, and it seems to be getting worse. We run the AC constantly, but it's a poorly ventilated, dark corner. What's the best long-term solution to kill the mold and prevent it from coming back, given our humid climate?

The black spots and damp smell point to active mold growth, likely due to condensation from the high humidity. This is common in Dubai's climate, especially after periods of heavy dew, in poorly ventilated spaces where cool AC air meets warm walls.

For a long-term solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible mold is often just the surface issue; the spores can penetrate porous materials like drywall and the root cause needs proper diagnosis. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold removal.

Start by addressing the moisture source. The heavy dew likely increased ambient humidity, and the cold back wall of the closet is a condensation point. Improve air circulation immediately. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or a portable fan pointed at the area can help dry it out temporarily. Remove all affected clothing and wash it thoroughly.

Permanent prevention requires correcting the environment. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can elevate indoor humidity. Consider having a technician assess if the AC capacity is sufficient for the room's size. For the closet itself, leaving some space between the wall and your clothes aids airflow. Replacing solid closet doors with louvered ones can make a significant difference. Applying a mold-resistant primer and paint after the area is professionally remediated will also help prevent recurrence.

Attempting to bleach or scrub it yourself often disperses spores and doesn't address the hidden growth. The goal is to create an environment where mold cannot thrive, which means controlling humidity and ensuring constant ventilation, even in closed spaces.
