How to permanently remove and prevent wardrobe mold?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the bedroom has started getting patches of black mold on the back wall, and my clothes are smelling damp. It's the interior wall facing the hallway, and I first noticed it a couple of weeks after that really humid spell we had. I run the AC constantly, but it seems to be getting worse. What's the most effective way to kill the existing mold and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The mold growth you're describing on the interior wall of your wardrobe is a classic symptom of a condensation issue, extremely common in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and constant AC use. The cold air from your AC is chilling that interior wall, causing moisture in the warmer air to condense on its surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold, typically Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold).

For effective removal, first address the moisture source. Simply cleaning the mold is a temporary fix. Move your clothes and thoroughly dry the area. For small patches, a solution of detergent and water can be used for cleaning, followed by disinfection with a UAE-approved biocide. However, given that the mold is on a porous surface (drywall) and has likely penetrated beyond the visible surface, professional remediation is strongly advised. DIY attempts can disturb spores, leading to wider contamination. Our certified technicians use specialized HEPA-filtered equipment to contain the area, safely remove contaminated materials, and apply industrial-grade antimicrobial treatments to eliminate the colony at its root.

To prevent recurrence, the underlying condensation problem must be solved. This involves improving air circulation within the wardrobe (do not overpack it) and, more critically, addressing the thermal bridging in the wall. The most permanent solution is to correct the wall's surface temperature. This can be achieved by improving the insulation of the cold wall or by using a dehumidification system to maintain humidity levels below 50%, the critical threshold for mold growth.

Given the persistent nature of this issue in our climate, a professional inspection is crucial to diagnose the exact cause and prescribe the correct engineering solution.
