How to permanently remove bahtroom humidity mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's on an interior wall, but it's the one that backs onto our en-suite bathroom. I'm worried the humidity from our showers is the cause. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Based on the location you've described—an interior wall corner adjacent to a bathroom—this is a classic case of humidity-induced mold growth, extremely common in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the condensation that forms when warm, moist air from showers meets cooler wall surfaces, especially those cooled by year-round AC.
Permanent removal is a two-part process: remediation and prevention. For the existing growth, do not simply wipe it. This can aerosolize spores. For a small area, a solution of detergent and water (not bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots) can be used to carefully clean the surface. However, given its location at the ceiling-wall joint, the mold may have penetrated the paint and possibly the underlying plasterboard. Scrubbing can damage the surface, making the problem worse. The only permanent solution is to control the moisture source. You must drastically reduce the humidity migrating from the bathroom. Ensure your bathroom extractor fan is functioning correctly and is run for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wipe down wet surfaces and keep the bathroom door closed during and after use to contain the moisture. For the bedroom itself, ensure your AC unit is properly maintained and set to a consistent temperature to minimize cold surface condensation. For a confirmed, lasting solution, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the exact extent of the moisture penetration and spore spread, which is often not visible to the naked eye. Our hygienization process involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions to ensure complete eradication.
