How to permanently remove bathroom mold in a Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Deira apartment's bathroom has started turning these dark greenish-black spots, and it's spreading behind the toilet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting really bad this past month, probably because of all the humidity. I’ve tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back after a few days. What is the most effective, permanent way to get rid of this for good?

The dark greenish-black spots in your Deira bathroom grout are almost certainly mold, thriving on the constant high humidity and condensation. Bleach is a common but ineffective solution; it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a permanent solution, the moisture source must be addressed first. In a Dubai apartment, this is often due to inadequate bathroom ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and ensure the bathroom door is left open to allow moisture to escape, not get trapped. Wiping down wet tiles and shower walls with a squeegee immediately after use is also highly effective at reducing the water available for mold growth.

To treat the existing mold, a proper fungicide is needed, not a bleach-based cleaner. Look for a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner designed for mold remediation. For extensive growth that has penetrated deep into the grout, the most effective method is to physically remove the contaminated grout and re-grout the area. This is the only way to ensure the mold's root structure is entirely eliminated.

If the mold is widespread, recurring persistently despite your efforts, or if you suspect it has spread behind walls (suggested by its presence behind the toilet), a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind surfaces, which is a common issue in buildings here due to our climate. A certified mold assessment can identify the species and provide a protocol for its complete removal, as improper handling can disperse harmful spores.
