How to permanently remove bathroom mold safely for family?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah villa. We had it professionally cleaned after the winter rains, but it’s already reappearing behind the toilet and along the grout. What is the most effective and family-safe way to permanently remove this mold and prevent it from returning?

Recurring black mold in a bathroom, especially after a professional cleaning, indicates a persistent moisture problem that wasn't resolved. The high humidity and constant use of AC in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold, as condensation often forms on cold walls and in poorly ventilated spaces.

For immediate, family-safe removal, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a 3% hydrogen peroxide spray. Apply it directly to the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid mixing chemicals like bleach and ammonia, as the fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. This will remove the visible growth but is not a permanent fix.

Permanent prevention requires addressing the source of moisture. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is powerful enough, runs for at least 30 minutes after showers, and vents directly outside, not into an attic space. Wipe down wet walls and shower areas after use to reduce ambient humidity. For villas, check that the bathroom's external walls are properly insulated to prevent condensation from forming on the cold interior surfaces—a common issue with AC.

If the mold returns persistently despite these measures, the issue is likely behind the walls or under the flooring, such as a slow pipe leak or compromised grout/waterproofing from the winter rains. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope to check for hidden moisture is necessary. A lab analysis of the mold can also confirm the species, which is important information if your children are experiencing respiratory irritation.
