How to permanently remove bathroom mold without a contractor« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It's been extra humid lately and the bathroom fan doesn't seem to be strong enough. What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good without having to call a contractor straight away?

Start by addressing the root cause: Dubai's high humidity, especially now, creates perfect conditions for mold. Your weak bathroom fan is likely not removing enough moisture. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a portable dehumidifier for the room.

For the existing mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating porous surfaces like paint or drywall.

After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. Repaint using a mold-inhibiting primer and paint, which are essential here given the climate. Check for and seal any grout cracks where moisture could be seeping in from behind.

This approach is effective for surface-level mold. However, if the black spots return quickly or cover an area larger than a square meter, the growth is likely behind the tiles or in the ceiling void. In apartments, this often requires a professional inspection to assess the extent and identify any leaks from adjacent units, which is a common issue in older Jumeirah buildings. Persistent mold after a thorough cleaning is the clearest sign you need a diagnostic assessment.
