How to permanently remove bathroom mold without a window?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black spots growing along the bottom of the bathroom wall that faces the outside. It’s been really humid lately and the room doesn't have a window, so I guess the ventilation just isn't enough. What’s the most effective way to kill this mold and stop it from coming back for good?

The black spots along your external wall are a classic Dubai issue. That wall is likely a "cold bridge," where outdoor heat meets your AC-cooled interior, causing constant condensation and creating a perfect mold habitat in the humid summer months.

For immediate removal, wear a mask and scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Bleach only removes the surface colour, not the root structure. Dry the area thoroughly afterward.

Permanent prevention requires managing humidity, as this is a condensation issue, not just a cleaning one. Since you lack a window, you must mechanically ventilate. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. Consider installing a timer switch to ensure it runs long enough. A portable dehumidifier used for an hour post-shower can also pull significant moisture from the air. Wipe down all wet surfaces, including walls and shower screens, to remove standing water.

For recurring or widespread mold, especially on external walls, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a more serious moisture intrusion from the building envelope and perform a swab test to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. This is crucial for ensuring the health of your indoor environment long-term.
