How to permanently remove bathroom shower mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black and green, especially in the corners. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and this seems to get worse every winter when we use the hot water more. I scrub it with bleach but it just comes back within a couple of weeks. What’s the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold for good and stop it from returning?

The recurring black and green discoloration in your shower grout is a classic sign of persistent mold growth, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the condensation from your hot showers. Bleach only bleaches the visible surface mold on non-porous surfaces; it does not penetrate porous grout to kill the root structure, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a long-term solution, you must address both the existing colony and the moisture that fuels it. Start by applying a dedicated EPA-registered fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, and allow it to dwell on the grout for the full recommended time to penetrate and kill the roots. For heavily affected or older grout that is cracked or crumbling, the mold has likely infiltrated deeply. In these cases, the most effective permanent fix is to remove and replace the compromised grout, ensuring a proper seal with a high-quality, mold-inhibiting product.

Preventing its return is critical. Your bathroom needs significantly more ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If you don't have one, installing one is a priority. Wiping down the shower walls and squeegeeing water off after each use removes the immediate moisture mold spores need to germinate. Finally, consider a professional dehumidifier for the bathroom if humidity levels consistently remain above 50%.

If the mold recurs despite these rigorous efforts, the issue may be more systemic, such as moisture trapped within the wall itself or inadequate sealing behind the tiles. In such serious or recurring cases, a professional inspection can identify hidden sources of moisture and the specific mold species present to guide an effective, targeted remediation plan.
