How to permanently remove bathroom shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's worse in the corner that doesn't get any sun. I try to keep the window open, but with this humidity, it feels like it never really dries out. What's the most effective way to kill this mold and stop it from coming back for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is primarily driven by the high ambient humidity and condensation from showers. The most effective removal starts with identifying the moisture source—it's rarely just surface water.

For the black spots in your grout, first try scrubbing with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Avoid bleach; it kills surface mold but leaves the roots intact, and the discoloration often returns. For persistent growth, a hydrogen peroxide-based solution is more effective at penetrating and killing the organism.

Permanent prevention requires controlling humidity. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working properly and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet tiles and squeegeeing glass surfaces immediately removes standing water. For that perpetually damp corner, a small portable dehumidifier can make a significant difference. Resealing your grout annually creates a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from soaking in.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, spreads over a large area (more than one square meter), or you notice a persistent musty odor, the growth may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can locate hidden dampness. Lab testing of a swab sample can also confirm the mold type, which is important if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities.
