How to permanently remove bedroom mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom in my Jumeirah apartment has this persistent damp smell, especially on the side closest to the AC vent. I wiped away some black spots from the corner of the wall a month ago, but they’re already coming back and I’m worried it’s affecting my sleep. What’s the best way to treat this for good and prevent it from spreading, considering our humid climate here?

That recurring black spot and damp smell indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai bedrooms due to constant AC use creating condensation. The humidity here provides the perfect environment for it to return if not addressed correctly.

Surface wiping is a temporary fix. For a permanent solution, start by identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In your case, check that the AC unit is draining properly and not leaking cold air directly onto the wall, which causes condensation. Ensure furniture isn't pressed tightly against the wall, restricting airflow and creating a cold spot.

For treatment, use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product on the affected area, not just bleach, which often only removes the color. Scrub thoroughly and allow the wall to dry completely. Consider using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer months, to keep relative humidity below 60%.

Given the growth returned quickly, the hyphae may have penetrated the wall material. For persistent cases, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent behind the wall and inside the AC unit itself. They can perform a moisture mapping assessment and air testing to identify all colonies. Remediation often involves targeted drying techniques and antimicrobial treatments, followed by verification through post-remediation testing to ensure it’s truly resolved and won’t affect your sleep.
