How to permanently remove black mold affecting health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in Jumeirah. It's been getting worse since the weather turned more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, it comes back. I’m starting to get headaches myself. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good and should we be seeing a doctor?

Black mold in bathrooms is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The persistent coughing and headaches you describe are legitimate health concerns, as certain mold species release irritants and mycotoxins that can affect respiratory health and cause symptoms. A visit to a doctor to discuss these specific symptoms is advisable, especially for the children.

Permanent removal requires addressing the moisture source, not just scrubbing the visible growth. In bathrooms, this is often due to inadequate ventilation. Ensure your exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately and using a dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture.

For effective cleaning, avoid bleach as it only removes surface discoloration. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and baking soda, applying it to the affected corners and allowing it to dwell before scrubbing. This approach is more effective at tackling the root structure.

However, if the mold returns persistently despite these measures, the issue may be deeper, such as hidden condensation within the AC ductwork servicing the bathroom or water seepage behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is warranted to identify the exact species and the hidden moisture source. A science-driven inspection using lab analysis can pinpoint the specific type of mold and its concentration, which is critical information for both effective remediation and for your doctor to understand potential exposure. This is the only way to achieve a permanent solution for health-related cases.
