How to permanently remove black mold and protect kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It started getting worse after the recent humidity spike, and no matter how much I scrub, it just comes back within a week. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be taking them to a doctor to get checked out?

Black mold in bathrooms is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers combined with year-round AC use. The recurring growth indicates a persistent moisture problem that simple scrubbing won't solve.

First, address the moisture source. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and corners with a squeegee immediately. For the mold itself, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner is more effective than bleach, which often only removes the surface color. Scrub thoroughly, let the solution sit, then rinse. For porous surfaces like grout or drywall, the mold may have penetrated deeply, requiring professional removal and replacement.

Given your children's coughing, a doctor's visit is prudent to rule out any respiratory irritation. For the mold itself, a professional inspection is recommended in cases of recurrence or suspected hidden growth behind tiles. They can identify the species and the full extent of the problem, which is often not just surface-level. The most permanent solution involves correcting the humidity issue, which may require improving ventilation or addressing AC condensation lines, followed by verified remediation.
