How to permanently remove black mold and stop coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and I’ve just found patches of black mold on the back of our bedroom closet, which is on the exterior wall of our villa in Jumeirah. It feels damp to the touch, and the coughing gets worse at night. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good, especially with our humid weather?

The dampness on your exterior wall is classic in Dubai's climate, especially in older villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The constant heat and humidity outside, combined with year-round AC cooling inside, creates significant condensation within the wall cavity. This trapped moisture is the perfect environment for the mold your children are reacting to.

For immediate cleaning of a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. However, this only addresses the surface growth you can see. The real issue is the moisture within the wall. Scrubbing the surface will not stop it from returning.

Permanent removal requires identifying and correcting the source of the dampness. This is almost always a professional task. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for building integrity and moisture control. A proper inspection can determine if the issue is insufficient insulation, a leaking pipe within the wall, or inadequate vapor barriers. The remediation process often involves controlled removal of affected materials, application of antimicrobial agents, and installing new moisture-resistant barriers.

To stop the coughing, the mold spores must be removed from your indoor air. While remediation is arranged, use a high-quality HEPA air purifier in the bedroom and maintain your AC unit with clean filters, as it can recirculate spores. Since the coughing is persistent and worse at night, a professional indoor air quality test from a company with its own microbiology lab is advisable. It will identify the specific mold species and spore count, which is critical information for both the remediation plan and understanding the health impact.
