How to permanently remove black mold and treat cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It's been spreading since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago, and now the whole room smells damp no matter how much I clean. What's the fastest and most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be taking them to a doctor for these symptoms?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from showers. The persistent damp smell confirms an active growth, not just surface stains. For your children's cough, a pediatrician visit is recommended to rule out other causes and address the irritation, which is a common reaction to mold spores.

Permanent removal requires addressing the moisture source. First, improve ventilation: run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it actually vents outside, not just into the ceiling void. Wipe down wet walls and corners with a squeegee after use. A dehumidifier can help significantly between showers.

For cleanup on non-porous tiles, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can scrub away visible growth. However, if the mold has penetrated porous grout or is behind sealant, scrubbing often only removes the surface color, not the root structure. The mold will return.

For a recurring problem that has already spread and is causing health symptoms, professional assessment is the most effective path. They can identify hidden moisture in walls or under floors that fuels the growth. Remediation involves removing contaminated materials like old sealant and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide before-and-after testing to verify the space is truly clear of elevated spore counts, which is the only way to know it's gone for good.
